Why Autumn is My Favourite Season
As the leaves begin to change colour and that crisp breeze starts whistling through, I always smile. I love Autumn. For me is signifies change. It is the time of the year when you can see a physical representation of why things must wither and shed sometimes, to be renewed. What we can learn from autumn, is that change is inevitable and necessary for growth.
Why change can be difficult:
Change can be difficult for many people because of the experiences they have had with it in the past. Many people’s first experience of change is something they did not choose to happen, but something they had to adjust and adapt to, such as a death of a loved one, finance issues, moving house or school suddenly.
In all change there is grief:
In all change there will be loss. Loss of what was before. And even if what is coming is positive, we may still feel sadness as it ends. Things that ultimately can be wonderful life changes, like leaving a job you have been unhappy in or ending a relationship that is not working, can still feel difficult. This is because we can still feel the discomfort of letting go and adjusting to the new normal, this is totally natural.
Autumn is a great time of the year to do some shedding of your own.
Use this season to reflect on what is in your life that is no longer serving you. Limiting beliefs and stories about yourself that you want to put down.
Use journaling to explore questions like:
- What patterns or habits am I ready to let go of?
- Where do I feel stuck?
- What changes do I want to make in my life?
- What goals or values do I want to focus on in the coming months?
Autumn is a season that invites us to slow down. Summer can be demanding of us socially. With the longer nights of Autumn, you may find that you can carve out more time for yourself!
Use this season to ask yourself:
- What activities bring me comfort and relaxation in this season?
- How can I build more moments of rest into my life?
- What boundaries do I need to implement to protect my mental and emotional well-being during this part of the year?
Humans have seasons too.
We repeatedly change and grow again. Each version of us is more unique and informed by what we have experienced in the seasons before. I have come to embrace Autumn, and I use this season as a reminder that for things to grow, we must be willing to let go of what is no longer serving us. We must be brave enough to trust that in by doing so, we can begin again.
